BYU Football is getting ready for their centennial football season and their 10th under Head Coach Kalani Sitake After a rough start to their Big 12 membership last year, BYU looks to bounce back and improve from last year’s 5-7 season. Red Shirt Senior Quarterback Gerry Bohanon is the fan favorite to be the 2024 starting Quarterback. When asked about the quarterback battle, Offensive Coordinator Aaron Roderick said:
“We’re getting there, I’m not in a hurry. We’re just going to keep playing for a little bit.”
Coach Roderick seems to be taking his time with this decision, ensuring that him and Coach Sitake make the correct decision. BYU needs a confident and talented quarterback to take the reigns after the Big 12 disaster a year ago.
Sophomore Running Back LJ Martin is returning from injury and is expected to have a great season running the football. After last year’s shoulder injury, Martin feels more confident than before.
“I feel a lot more comfortable right now. It’s real easy you know. I know a lot more route concepts and stuff so I know where everyone’s going, the spacing and stuff.” LJ Martin told reporters during BYU’s third practice of Fall Camp.
“Even with the O-Line doing, I’m able to get that down now, so it’s been a lot easier just trying to get everything like understand where people are gonna be and how I need to set up blockers has been a lot easier.” Martin continued.
Last Season, Martin had run for 518 yards and 10 touchdowns in ten games, giving BYU a bright spot in a struggling run offense.
BYU’s defense also looks like they could be better this year with Defensive Coordinator Jay Hill saying that “We are much further ahead than we were last year at this time.” Coach Hill also added that “We still have some things to clean up.” With big names returning such as Mitch Harper and Miles Hall returning, the future is bright with this BYU Defense. Ben Bywater’s decision to medically retire from BYU Football has definitely caused some shakeup but Coach Hill has been optimistic, mentioning the Senior Linebacker Choé Bryant-Strother as a replacement for Bywater.
BYU’s Special Teams looks promising this year as well, with Special Teams Coordinator Kelly Poppinga saying that “we are very pleased with our three kickers.” with Coach Poppinga adding: “The last three practices I don’t thinks Will has missed Matthias has missed one in the first three practices so yeah very encouraged.”
Overall, BYU looks poised to bounce back and exceed expectations in 2024 after a rough start to their Big 12 membership. Things are looking up with BYU’s coaching staff feeling optimistic for the program’s future.
