BYU Football is back next month, and we are going to take a look at the 2025 team, unit by unit.

We did it, Cougar Nation, we made it to July. Of course, this can only mean one thing: BYU Football is one month away. The Cougars have had some big hopes for 2025, with some experts predicting an 11-1 regular season record. The Cougars had a 9-0 record in 2024 before losing at home to Kansas and on the road at Arizona State. BYU would beat Houston in week 12 before beating Colorado 36-14. BYU is looking to build on last year’s success and possibly bring hardware back to Provo.
BYU had a strong team last year. Offense, defense, and special teams were all on fire, and BYU had a great 11-2 season. The Cougars weren’t perfect and had to pull off a few late-game drives to get a few of their wins. But the Cougars had one of their best seasons in a while and bounced back from 2023’s 5-7 season.BYU looks ot be getting better this year. Let’s take a look at this year’s team.

Offense
BYU’s offense has taken a huge hit. The talk about starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff transferring seems to be true. BYU will need to figure out the quarterback situation soon. However, LJ Martin, Hinckley Ropati, and Soni Moa look to be good running backs, and BYU has a good receiver base in Parker Kingston and Chase Roberts. BYU had an electric offense and a strong kick return game with Kingston showing what he can do. BYU ran up the score against a few good teams last year, and with a good chunk of the same pieces still in place, they could do it again this year.
Defense
BYU’s defense went wild last year. Led by the now graduated Tyler Batty and the strong Isaiah Glasker, BYU’s defense forced turnovers, losses, and punts. The Cougars held the Colorado Buffaloes to just points in the Valero Alamo Bowl and kept both SMU and Kansas State out of the end zone. The Cougars’ three takeaways in three consecutive Kansas State drives helped seal the deal at home, while BYU’s blitz packages kept SMU under constant pressure. BYU has a good defense, and it seems to get better every year.
Special Teams
BYU’s Special Teams were its bread and butter last year. The Cougars scored a lot of points on field goals, kick returns, and punt returns. The Cougars were red hot from the place kick, with kicker Will Ferrin making 24 of 27 field goals at a conversion rate of 88.9%. BYU was also good behind the likes of Parker Kingston, returning kicks and punts for scores. BYU has a good chunk of the special teams unit returning, and it should be exciting.
BYU has a good team this year, and I am looking forward to seeing them in action again in August. BYU is a winning program, and they can only go up from here. The Cougars have high expectations this next year, and it will be fun!
