Diego Luna has a real case for the USMNT in this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America. Let’s break it down.

Diego Luna! I can hear the chant raining down from the stands at America First Field. Luna has been electric this year, and is picking up right where he left off in 2025. Despite an injury that kept him out for the first few matches of the season, he is getting back to his goalscoring ways. In 2026 , he has four goals and three assists, and scored early goals against both Sporting Kansas City and San Diego FC. He has been a huge part of this RSL side for the -past couple of seasons, and fully deserves to be at the World Cup this summer.
Luna, or Moon Man, as he is known as to RSL fans, is a talented attacking midfielder who has made himself a force in the United States. He originally came from the El Paso Locomotive, and after a couple of seasons, became a staple of RSL’s squad. He went from Moon Boy to Moon Man, as pointed out by MLS on Apple TV commentator Brian Dunseith. Luna has an incredible work ethic, and knows how to be in the right place at the right time.
This was especially true against San Diego FC in April. SDFC had a goal kick in the north end, and a casual pass by goalkeeper CJ Dos Santos was intercepted by Luna and finished before SDFC could blink. Luna had a great match. Moon Man had a goal, an assist, and a co-assist. Needless to say, the north end crowd at America First Field was in Dos Santos’ ear the rest of the match. Luna has no quit, and he has a strong presence, and has a real case.

Diego Luna is special. He could bring great strength, energy, and attacking power to this World Cup squad. He has skill, determination, and accuracy that the USMNT needs. Luna last year had nine goals and seven assists in MLS play. Luna also has strength that others don’t have, as seen in the USMNT match where he broke his nose, put gauze in it to contain the bleeding, and then kept playing.
Mauricio Pochettino has spoken highly of Luna, and he seems to be fond of the 22-year old midfielder. It would be wise for Pochettino and the US Soccer Federation to give him a call in a couple weeks. Luna has earned it, and he is a great player. Another thing that sticks out about Luna is that he is mature and a great leader. He has led RSL rallies in his now four years at RSL. He has led them through the rough times, and done it with maturity and patience. Luna is 22 now, and is full qualified for the USMNT this summer.
Overall, Luna is a great player. and should get a call up here in a couple weeks. His energy, his heart, and his determination all make him a player that Pochettino could field this summer. He is the missing link in this RSL side, and he is going to be great. I feel like he is a lock for the USMNT and he could cement that with solid performances against Houston, Colorado, and Minnesota in the next couple of weeks. Luna controls his own destiny, and he has proved himself beyond any doubt.
