BYU Football is getting ready for the 2025 season. What are the best and worst-case scenarios for BYU this year?

BYU Football is getting closer. We are just 43 days away from the season opener against Portland State. BYU has found a few key transfers, and now they are looking better. The fans have high expectations after last year’s 11-2 campaign. The Cougs have some big returners and a few notable additions, making this year’s team exciting. BYU has some doubters to prove wrong yet again, and they are looking like they could do it.
BYU last year had a nine-game winning streak before falling to Kansas and Arizona State. BYU would roll past Houston before smashing Colorado in the Valero Alamo Bowl. BYU had some heart-stopping moments and lived up to the “Cardiac Cougs” nickname. BYU hit a game-winning field goal against Utah, pulled off a beautiful touchdown drive against Oklahoma State, and caught a game-sealing interception against Baylor. BYU also beat up on Arizona and Kansas State.
BYU was in the College Football Playoff conversation last year before the losses to Kansas and Arizona State derailed that. BYU would then play in what was called “The People’s Big 12 Championship,” the Alamo Bowl, where they defeated Colorado 36-14. BYU would then be ranked in the Top 25 postseason poll.

BYU this year has unfinished business. BYU was a few yards away from beating both Kansas and ASU. If they had even one loss, they would have clinched a spot in the Big 12 Championship with a berth in the College Football Playoff on the line. BYU is not expected to have the same season this year, so it is going to be fun to see them prove the doubters wrong.
What is the best-case scenario for BYU this year?
Making the College Football Playoff
BYU was so close to the CFP last year. They could have made it in with just one loss. They were also a favorite for the Big 12 title as the season went on. BYU was orginallly expected to have 4.5 wins but squashed that record. BYU is no stranger to adversity and has proven people wrong time and time again.
BYU has some key returning players this year, with LJ Martin, Jack Kelly, Parker Kingston, and Will Ferrin all coming back. BYU also has a strong recruiting class and key transfers. The Cougars have a few solid options at quarterback, and the coaching is top-notch.

BYU can make the College Football Playoff. The defense, which had a couple of stars graduate last year, still has some of the core players intact, and they could be hard to beat. BYU just needs to win and win again, losing no more than one game. The more they win, the more likely they will be to get into the College Football Playoff.
What is the worst-case scenario for BYU this year?
Barely Bowl Eligible.
BYU still has a few question marks, such as the quarterback situation and the offensive issues from last year. IF BYU can’t get these figured out, it could be a bumpy year. BYU should still make a bowl game, but there is still some uncertainty around this offense.
BYU also has some questions to answer around the defense, with notable players either graduating or transferring. BYU does have some of the core players returning, and it does feel like there is confidence, but with the NIL and transfer portal era, teams can be shaken up year after year.
Still, a bowl game is a good result. That means that BYU would have to have at least six wins, which would rule out a losing season. BYU does have high expectations, and the team, as well as the fans, want to win championships. A lot is riding on this season, and I expect it to land somewhere in between. There is a long season ahead and it is almost time.
Six weeks, Cougar Nation.
